Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Park Service is accepting applications for four (4) long-term contractual Veteran Conservation Corps (VCC) Crew Members. The successful applicants will be working as a crew of four Conservation Corps members based out of Point Lookout State Park in Scotland, Maryland. The Crew Members will report directly to and provide assistance to the Crew Leader for the Veteran Conservation Corps. Crew Members will complete conservation projects in areas such as recreation enhancement, park operations, habitat restoration, and trail building and construction. The selected candidates may also work on other projects, education components, jobs skills training, and life skills training. Travel around the state will be necessary for projects and trainings and there will be mandatory overnight trips for up to a week at a time. These positions may be responsible for assisting with the following functions: weekly reports, monthly calendar schedules, tool inventory and vehicle forms.

Duties include but are not limited to the following: 

  • Serve as a role model for veterans.
  • Accept responsibility for any assigned equipment and vehicles.
  • Implement daily schedules.
  • Work on community service projects with corps members and community leaders.
  • Speak to the public, community groups, school groups, organizations, and media to plan, develop and delivery programs.

Candidates will be working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and must be in good physical condition. Position will require working weekends and holidays. Candidates may be subject to call-in status. Applicants must have the ability to follow verbal and written instructions, work independently, and must possess excellent communication skills and a strong desire to work with the public. Applicants must adhere to all State and Federal laws, safety regulations, and must understand and adhere to all park policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the field of park operations, recreation, education, business administration, forestry, social sciences or a natural resources related field.

Experience: None.

Note:  

1. Candidates may substitute experience in park management, recreation or a natural resources related field on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in management and program clerical and assistance classification or management and program clerical and assistance specialty codes in the general, administrative, clerical, and office services field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. Mainly used for your trainee level in class series. 

For education obtained outside of the U.S., you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service. If you possess a degree obtained outside of the United States, please submit a detailed, course-by-course evaluation report from one of the U.S. equivalency evaluating members identified at http://www.naces.org/members.htm with the application. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following.  Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualification(s).

Service in the US Armed Forces with a DD-214 is preferred.

Ability to lift up to 20 pounds repeatedly and use hand tools (pulaskis, sledge hammers and chainsaws etc.) is preferred.

Possession of a valid driver's license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving) is preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a phone number where they can be reached.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
