LOCATION OF POSITION

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Forest Service, in Oakland, Maryland is currently accepting applications for multiple seasonal Maintenance and Campground Operations positions.  One seasonal position of either a Campground Operations/Maintenance or Campground Operations. The selected candidates will work at Potomac- Garrett State Forest in Garrett County. Please make sure that your selections on the supplemental questionnaire correspond to the positions you are interested in being considered for.

Maintenance/Natural Resources Associate (3 vacancies)   

40 hours a week, Mon-Fri, beginning in March

Pay: $10.86/hr

 

This position is responsible for the general maintenance of buildings, grounds, facilities and equipment of the State Forest.  The work entails independently performing moderately complex tasks in maintenance work, including heavy equipment operations for road and trail maintenance, routine construction work, campsite maintenance, rendering routine preventative maintenance, and making minor repairs or improvements to buildings, fixtures, mechanical equipment, grounds and roadways.  Other duties may include but are not limited to: operating both small and heavy equipment, planting trees, operating chainsaws, habitat improvement projects and boundary line maintenance.  The selected candidate may be required to work some weekends and/or holidays.  

Note: Applicant must be able to lift 70 lbs and work in inclement weather and rugged terrain. 

 

One seasonal position of either a Campground Operations/Maintenance or Campground Operations.

 

Campground Operations/Maintenance (1 vacancy)

40 hours a week, Wed.-Sat. beginning March

Pay: $9.68/hr.

 

This Position is responsible for all duties associated with campground operations including fee collection in four remote, primitive camping areas; cleaning and maintaining restrooms and campsites, documenting forest activities and general maintenance of State Forest facilities.  As first line of contact with State Forest visitors and campers, this position requires good communication skills and is expected to convey knowledge of forest rules and regulations, forest attractions and recreational opportunities including information about the surrounding areas of tourism and attractions.  Weekend work required for operational duties, with weekday duties being more general maintenance and labor.

 

Campground Operations (1 vacancy)

16 hours a week, Fri. & Sat. starting in May/3 months

Pay: $10.86/hr.

 

This Position is responsible for all duties associated with campground operations including fee collection in four remote, primitive camping areas; cleaning and maintaining restrooms and campsites, documenting forest activities and general maintenance of State Forest facilities.  As first line of contact with State Forest visitors and campers, this position requires good communication skills and is expected to convey knowledge of forest rules and regulations, forest attractions and recreational opportunities including information about the surrounding areas of tourism and attractions.  Weekend work required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: None.

Note:

Experience in biology, park management, law enforcement, forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

For the Natural Resources Associate position, A class A or B license is preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland. Driving records will be checked.

Note:  Applicants must be able to lift up to 70 lbs. and work in inclement weather and rugged terrain.
