The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Geological Survey, in Baltimore, Maryland is currently accepting applications for a Geologist I. The selected candidate will collect and analyze sediments for sedimentological characteristics, collect and process seismic and hydroacoustic data including sub-bottom and side-scan sonar imagery, as well as perform sampling and data collection on small to medium sized boats. Sediment analysis will be performed for various physical sedimentological characteristics in the laboratory. The incumbent will assist senior geologists in interpretation of these data, in support of scientific studies of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries and the waters of the State, specifically for bottom sediment classification purposes utilizing a variety of mapping and GIS software for inclusion in scientific reports and publications. The incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining field and laboratory equipment in operable and accurate condition.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science.

Experience: None

Note:  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education. 

For education obtained outside of the U.S., you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service. DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following. Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualification(s).

A degree in Geology with additional coursework in marine geology is desired.  

Education and/or experience conducting and processing hydroacoustic surveys (side scan sonar, seismic, and bathymetry) is preferred.

Education and/or experience on small to medium sized boats is preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. When assigned to an environmental program at the Department of the Environment, employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Information about these regulations is available in the Human Resources Office of the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Website.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protection equipment such as respiratory protection equipment.

2. Employees in this classification may be subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response.

3. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached or carry an electronic pager.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
