Main Purpose of Job

This position provides full performance levels of motorized equipment operation and maintenance in support of all activities associated with the proper function of the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery Program.

POSITION DUTIES

This position provides full performance levels of grounds keeping and building services work involving the care, beautification, operations and maintenance of State cemetery grounds and facilities.  This position performs and facilitates all the tasks associated with the interment of veterans and their dependents while providing basic maintenance services to ensure proper upkeep and care of the cemetery grounds, along with all associated buildings and equipment.  This employee may supervise and train lower level workers or equipment operators in the proper use of motorized equipment assigned to the cemetery.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of the sixth grade.

Experience: One year of experience in the operation of complex or specialized construction or maintenance equipment which has a pedal operated clutch and a multi-speed manual transmission.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Equipment Operator classifications or Equipment Operator and Vehicle Operator specialty codes in the Equipment Operation field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following:

1. Professional experience with maintenance and repair of heavy equipment

2. Professional experience working in a cemetery setting

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Applicants for Motor Equipment Operator I/II and III must possess a valid Maryland Driver’s License depending on the type of equipment operated. All applicants must list their license number and date of issue on the application. Employees in the State Highway Administration, Department of Transportation may be required to obtain and maintain Departmental certification on several pieces of specialized seasonal equipment.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
