Introduction

The Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community who in partnership with families, provides an equitable and exemplary education in a nurturing, engaging and challenging environment to insure our students achieve personal excellence and become lifelong learners.  The Health and Safety officer will be responsible to support the MSD community by performing safety and risk management duties, assist in policy development and serve as the liaison between school management and local emergency management personnel.

Main Purpose of Job

This position coordinates safety services designed to meet the unique needs of the campus community including maintaining a safe campus environment, protecting life and property and serving as the liaison with county and state emergency planners, fire and law enforcement organization. The position is responsible to develop policies and procedures that will ensure the health and safety of faculty, staff, students and visitors.

POSITION DUTIES

Analyze and determine community safety needs; develop programs and systems to respond to those needs, assess the effectiveness of the program and make program modifications as needed; coordinate the emergency preparedness and response procedures for the community and advise the community in emergency situations; implement trainings and drills to increase health and safety awareness at all levels within the organization; conduct safety inspections of campus building to insure compliance with MOSH, OSHA, MDE and the Fire Marshall.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, the physical sciences or related field is required.

Experience:  Two years of experience as an environmental health and safety professional.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Familiarity with National Incident Management System and knowledge of educational and campus environments including communicating with and engaging administrative leadership, faculty, staff and students.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense.  (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)

A copy of any certification relevant to safety should be uploaded.
