Introduction

The Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community who in partnership with families, provides an equitable and exemplary education in a nurturing, engaging and challenging environment to insure our students achieve personal excellence and become lifelong learners.  As such, we are looking for dedicated individuals who can join us in the education of the children at MSD.

The program will take place Monday through Thursday from 8 am to 12 noon starting July 6th and ending July 23rd.

Main Purpose of Job

To develop and implement an educational program for Deaf students in a language accessible environment as well as provide an enriched bicultural environment conducive to the development of the optimal social and emotional growth of Deaf students. To provide a language enriched environment through use of sign language and printed word to meet the varied needs of Deaf Students.

POSITION DUTIES

Implement the educational program and teach deaf students with varying degrees of intellectual, academic and physical challenges.  Assist with the development of an Individual Education Program (IEP) and the implementation of the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards. Provide diagnostic/prescriptive services and all required reports related to the students’ progress.  Work in conjunction with the Behavior Specialist and Assistant Principals in the development and implementation of classroom behavior management programs. Report on ESY goals identified on the student’s IEP.  Provide for the academic, social, emotional and developmental needs of the students.  This is a contractual position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree required.  Fluency in American Sign Language and written English required.  Knowledge of students with additional disabilities and ability to teach students on different levels and with varying educational backgrounds is required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and understanding of the Deaf Community is preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

MD State Teacher Certification required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be available for training and set up on June 30th and July 1st.  Copy of MD Teacher Certification must be submitted with application.  New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense.  (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)
