Main Purpose of Job

The Managing Director will report to the Vice President of Content. This position will acquire and schedule television programs within public television editorial standards on all MPT channels. It will manage acquisitions and have strategic programming, negotiation and presentation responsibilities. This position will support increased revenue through corporate support, pledge, auction and events. Management responsibilities include hiring, training, leading and motivating staff in programming, scheduling and traffic.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Evaluate, acquire and schedule television programs within public television editorial standards on all MPT channels.
  • Maintain and evolve ongoing series.
  • Manage acquisitions within an agreed upon budget.
  • Support increased revenue through corporate support, pledge, auction and events.
  • Lead and/or participate in mutually agreed upon/assigned meetings.
  • Hire, train, lead and motivate staff in programming, scheduling and traffic.
  • Analyze overall performance of acquired product utilizing a broad spectrum of research tools and sources to identify key metrics, trends and insights.  Maintain demographic information for all programs.
  • Manage and create business communications and presentations for senior management that fuses financial, strategic and competitive information cohesively.
  • Support highly visible company-wide initiatives by modeling potential deal scenarios and ROIs as well as developing program reports.
  • Implement programming strategies based on station priorities.
  • Maintain awareness of changes in the marketplace in both programmatic and technical areas.
  • Review deal proposals with a focus on ratings estimates, scheduling plans and usage.
  • Monitor industry intelligence and evaluate competitive landscape while managing the development and maintenance of databases that include linear and digital program deals.
  • Curate "white paper" reports on industry trends relevant to program acquisitions.
  • Oversee and lead office staff.  Work towards building out the operational foundation of this new team.  Lead and streamline the department's operational priorities and workflow process to expedite efficiencies.
  • Meets internally with individuals in the programming staff, senior management, producers, research manager and creative services on a daily basis.  Meets with other positions as necessary.
  • Maintain ongoing relationships with external producers, distributors and program providers especially within the public broadcasting arena.
  • Attend all trade and program conventions and symposia, such as Fall Marketplace, BBC America and the PBS Annual meeting.
  • Prepare reports for Commission and Foundation(s)
  • Brainstorm and execute key initiatives, marathons and scheduling tactics for show launches and sustaining support.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree with a focus on Media and/or Business

Minimum 8+ years in television programming/Acquisitions, coupled with Programming Research experience at a Television Network or station.  Must have a robust understanding of cable and industry trends.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated senior level experience managing program acquisitions with public media experience preferred.
  • Solid analytical skills with ability to examine data and easily explain complex concepts.
  • Advanced level experience in creating visually and compelling executive level presentations, including communicating ideas and information graphically and effectively.  Advanced PowerPoint skills preferred.
  • High level communicator who exemplifies diplomacy and tact and can manage up and down in a matrix organization.
  • Exudes a high level of strategic competence, executive presence and communication skills.
  • Expertise with Nielsen.
