Main Purpose of Job

Develop and direct year round publicity and promotional efforts to position MPT favorably in the print, video and social media public arena throughout Maryland.  Serve as full-time media spokesperson for the agency.  Perform copywriting for CEO/COO and collaborate in the preparation of institutional communications.  Independently develop a strategic communications plan for MPT, while consulting with the CEO.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Manages the day-to-day publicity operation and communications including promoting daily programming using a wide array of media.
  • Becomes fully versed on all activities, issues and events at MPT in order to spot publicity opportunities; he/she attends production planning meetings and other meetings to be familiar with content in the pipeline and upcoming activities that will require publicity and station scheduling 
  • Cultivates relationships with print and electronic media (including reporters, editors, bloggers) to facilitate story pitching
  • Performs copywriting for one-sheets, backgrounders, advisories or releases as required and/or performs editing and fact-checking on such materials produced by others before dissemination outside MPT
  • Performs research, writing, fact-checking, and formatting on a wide variety of communications for the CEO/COO
  • Revamps and maintains content and links to/from the online Press Room
  • Hires and supervises work of photographers or videographers to obtain still photos or video footage needed to supplement publicity efforts
  • Utilizes appropriate social media tools in cultivating coverage of MPT stories among media representatives statewide
  • Manages the continual development and improvement of media lists so that all media statewide are utilized in the MPT publicity efforts; he/she continually scrutinizes print and electronic media to identify potential outlets for MPT news
  • Develops and maintains a style guide for his/her office and for the use of other copywriters at MPT. 
  • Manages his/her budget and keeps track of receipts, vendor documents and billing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Marketing or a related discipline

7 years of relevant experience in communications, marketing and external relations

  • Must have established local media contacts
  • Must have social media experience
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with AP style
  • Must have proven written communications skills

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of TV industry and PBS is a plus
