Main Purpose of Job

This position is critical to the work of Legal Services in providing the agency with the competent legal representation it needs to meet its essential mission of protecting and obtaining permanency for vulnerable children.  This position represents the agency in Child-in-Need-of-Assistance (CINA) adjudications, dispositions, reviews, permanency hearings, child-in-placement reviews, custody and guardianship review, as well as miscellaneous CINA hearings.  This incumbent will be required to represent in court at least 4 days a week.

POSITION DUTIES

This position requires the incumbent to be an attorney licensed to practice law in the State of Maryland.  Responsibilities include representing the Agency at the Department of Administrative Hearings and in the Civil, Juvenile and District Courts in order to provide protection for vulnerable children and adults, obtain permanency for children in out-of home placements, and maintain confidentiality of vital information and sensitive records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Juris Doctor or equivalent degree from an accredited school of law.

Experience: Experience as a practicing attorney.

Notes:

1. A Social Services Attorney must be a current member of the Maryland Bar.

2. The above requirements are set by the Department of Human Resources in accordance with an Opinion of the Attorney General dated June 13, 1988.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in Juvenile Law and experience representing a government agency are preferred.
