This is a Management level position responsible for providing leadership and support for MSDE’s network administration and for overseeing help desk support and related services to MSDE staff.

Main Purpose of Job

This is a professional position responsible for managing technical and operational staff in planning, integrating and maintaining IT network systems, software and hardware for local and wide area networks and support Windows, Google, Cisco network infrastructures. This position will supervise Computer Network Specialists in the day-to-day operations of MSDE’s data center.

POSITION DUTIES

Serves as the on-site Manager for server operations, supervision, management, and systems monitoring; supervises network specialists in the installation of operating system software and network communications software and consults with users for local or wide area computer network software needs; assesses existing software and hardware to survey sites where networks will be located; participates in the design of the structure of local or wide area computer networks; prepares and assembles technical documentation and user documentation for network software and hardware; monitors the performance of the network software and hardware through network management and diagnostic programs and utilities; maintains and analyzes records of network activity and recommends and implements network software and hardware upgrades; diagnoses network software and hardware problems and makes repairs and adjustments or obtains service from software and hardware vendors and maintenance vendors; approves users network privileges and provides ongoing user support.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's Degree in computer information technology, management information systems or other information technology related field, to include course work in local or wide area computer networks, from an accredited college or university.  

Experience: Three years of experience planning, integrating and maintaining software and hardware for local or wide area computer networks.  

Note: Candidates may substitute experience directly related to the position on a year-for-year basis for up to 4 years for the required education.  U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Network Analyst classifications or Network Integration and Management specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of any combination of enterprise networking environments and Storage Area Network (SAN) technologies, information system architecture, system security practices, Microsoft Server Technologies, versions of Active Directory, Cisco routers and Switches, Storage Area Networks (specifically Citrix), skill in systems management, product integration, and managing the life cycle of technology products;  ability to support and maintain a multi-server LAN and WAN;  ability to interact and support the technology needs of users; ability to ensure network connectivity and functionality during core business hours; ability to write clear and concise instructions, updates and log entry documentation; ability to communicate effectively and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of customers to include network users, vendor representatives and engineers.
