Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is seeking a Chief, Bureau of Environmental Health for the Carroll County Health Department.  The main purpose of this position will be to protect the public health through planning, directing, and supervising the activities of a medium-sized (population 180,000) County Local Environmental Health Department Bureau. The incumbent will lead the Bureau in securing compliance with local and State health and/or environmental regulations and/or laws, and coordinating environmental health programs with Carroll County and municipal governments. Desirable qualifications-The successful applicant should have the ability to coordinate programs and activities across various governmental agencies and/or organizations, be able to comfortably present information before elected and high level appointed officials in an open forum, and be able to navigate the complex network of laws and regulations delegated to the Environmental Health Bureau to identify changes that would potentially affect the citizens in Carroll County.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in biological, physical, environmental science or chemistry, and six years of experience involving inspections and investigations in the field of environmental health or closely related environmental health experience, including two years in a supervisory capacity.  A master’s degree in Public Health or Environmental Health Science can substitute for one year non-supervisory experience.

The successful applicant should have the ability to coordinate programs and activities across various governmental agencies and other organization, be able to comfortable present information before elected and high level appointed officials in an open forum, and be able to navigate the complex network of laws and regulations delegated to the Environmental Health Bureau and identify changes that would potentially affect the citizens in Carroll County.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates for positions in this classification must possess and maintain a current license or be eligible to obtain licensure as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist from the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists.
