Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency is seeking an exceptional individual to serve as intern within the Internal Audit Division.  The State Retirement and Pension System is responsible for properly administering retirement, disability, and death benefits.  The System currently provides monthly allowances to about 229,000 retirees and beneficiaries, and is an essential element of the future financial security for more than 351,000 active participating members.  The mission of the Internal Audit Division is to provide independent, objective assurance and consulting services designed to add value and improve the operations of the State Retirement and Pension System.  It assists the System in accomplishing its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, internal control, and governance processes.  

This is a volunteer summer internship, which aims to provide a substantive learning environment sufficient to justify the award of course credit if requested.  The internship period will take place between June/July 2015 and August/September 2015.  The specific start date, end date, hours and schedule will be determined in collaboration between the intern and supervisor based upon mutual needs.

Main Purpose of Job

This is a volunteer summer internship position, which aims to provide a substantive learning environment of auditing. This is a great opportunity to gain work experience while meeting college requirements. The trainee will gain knowledge in the areas of program results, and compliance verification of accounting systems.

POSITION DUTIES

The Internal Audit Intern will have the opportunity to:

  • Assist in performing risk based audits in accordance with Audit Plan, 
  • Participate in walkthrough meetings,
  • Document business processes by creating flowcharts / narratives, and
  • Identifying and perform testing of internal controls.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates will meet the following criteria:

  • Current student pursuing a Bachelor's degree and/or Graduate's degree in Accounting or Finance,
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and Visio,
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate to all levels of management,
  • Strong attention to detail,
  • Strong organizational skills,
  • Ability to execute assigned tasks within the budgeted time allotments, and
  • Ability to work effectively independently, and as a member of a team.
