Introduction

The IT Systems Support Specialist II maintains, modifies, and operates computer systems and networks. Installs supports and manages servers and resolves issues as needed.  Installs patches and performs system backups and recovery.  Monitors system configuration and maintains data files.  Develops, implements and maintains programs and system utilities, data back and restore procedures, disaster recovery, and change management documentation.

Main Purpose of Job

This individual is accountable for the following systems: Windows Server and Application systems that support the core business functions of the agency; Responsibilities on these systems include system administration and provisioning, operations and support, maintenance and monitoring of computer systems and network to ensure continual innovation, and high availability.  The individual is also responsible for maintaining network devices and configurations.

The position will be utilized to provide backup support to our desktop support staff on an as needed basis.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Install, test, debug and maintain operating system software, applications, or data communications software.
  • Develop programs, procedures and standards for interfaces between software applications programs, the user processes, the communication subsystems and the computer operating system.
  • Document and maintain operating system or data communications system procedures, configurations, and properly adhere to change management procedures.
  • Secures the central processing unit, peripherals and stored data from unauthorized access and disturbance or destruction of data or operating capability through system security software and recovery procedures.
  • Prepares and maintains disaster recovery plans and performs backup procedures to facilitate recovery of stored data and data processing operations.
  • Participates in the conduct of long and short range studies for determining the feasibility of converting to or modifying existing data processing systems including the operating system capacity requirements.
  • Perform problem analysis to provide appropriate and timely corrective action when agency users are adversely impacted by application or systems malfunctions and errors.
  • Coordinates with vendor representatives in the installation or testing phases of new hardware or system software. Resolves issues related to operating systems procedures with operations staff, other data processing personnel and systems users.
  • Monitors computer system performance and utilization, modifies operating system parameters and makes adjustments to disk space allocations to fine tune system performance according to established performance standards for system response times.
  • Perform other special projects and assignments as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Computer Science, Management Information Systems or other information technology related field to include course work in machine or assembler computer languages, and operating system and data communication technology for multipurpose, multi tasking computers.

Experience: One year of experience maintaining and modifying operating systems for multipurpose, multi tasking computers.

Notes:

1. Thirty credit hours from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Computer Science, Management Information Systems or other information technology related field to include course work in machine or assembler computer languages, and operating system and data communication technology for multipurpose multi tasking computers may be substituted for the required education.

2. One additional year of experience maintaining and modifying operating systems for multipurpose, multi tasking computers may be substituted for the required education.

3. Experience operating multipurpose, multi tasking computer systems; or scheduling, controlling input and output or maintaining a tape library to process data on multipurpose, multi tasking computer systems; or converting data from project specifications by developing program code using third generation or other generally accepted computer programming languages; or designing, developing and maintaining communications networks may be substituted for high school on a year for year basis.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the Computer Systems Operations classifications or Computer Systems Operations specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent time management, interpersonal, oral and written communications skills
  • Experience with Amazon Web Services
  • Able to work off hours as necessary to cover, late nights, early mornings and weekend
  • End point management (McAfee EPO, Checkpoint Encryption)
  • Experience with Dell KACE
  • SQL Databases
  • Experience with Windows Server 2008/2012, Active Directory and Group Policies, Backup Systems, VMware, Cisco Networking and Disaster Recovery.
  • Experience writing standard operating procedures and policies. 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification may be subject to call 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where the employee can be reached or will be furnished with a pager.
