Introduction

This is a Position Specific recruitment for the Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services (DPSCS).  The resulting eligible list will be used to fill the current vacancy at the Patuxent Institution.

LOCATION OF POSITION

The vacancy currently exists at the Patuxent Institution, Jessup, Md. (Howard County)

Main Purpose of Job

Supervises Correctional Dietary Officers who are responsible for supervising inmates in the preparation and serving of meals in a correctional facility

POSITION DUTIES

Monitoring daily food service and security activities and reviewing reports to assess quality of job performance; counseling, instructing, directing or disciplining of subordinate staff as necessary in response to job performance or behavior factors.

Monitors and evaluates food service operations to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, quality assurance guidelines, security concerns and contractual provisions, which include:

Reviewing sanitation, meal count and food temperature reports; coordinating food service operations with institutional management and/or headquarters' staff; reviewing and determining appropriateness and accuracy of invoices, supplies and equipment orders and/or food purchases; inspecting food service facilities, equipment and operations; preparing periodic reports to food service managers; prepares recommendations for institutional food service policies, procedures and guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Experience: Three years of experience involving the custody, security and supervision of adult inmate workers in a food operation of a correctional institution.

Note:

1. The above educational requirement is set by the Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional institutional specialty codes in the criminal justice field of work at a rate of two years of military experience for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. Some positions in this classification may require the operation of a motor vehicle for the transportation of inmates or supplies. Employees assigned such duties will be required to acquire the appropriate Maryland driver's license.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees who have not already done so must meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission for a correctional officer during their probationary period (Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209). Selection standards for correctional officer training are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01 and include the following:

U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status
Must be at least 21 years of age
A completed background investigation
Oral interview
Physical examination.

2. Employees are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, must provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

3. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination may consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the job.  It is essential that you give complete and accurate information on your application.  Successful candidates will be placed on the employment eligible list categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED or QUALIFIED.  The eligible list will be valid for at least one year and maybe extended.  This list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees.
