Introduction
The Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR), Division of Labor and Industry/Safety Inspection Unit is accepting applications from qualified candidates for the position of Elevator Inspector I. This is the intermediate level of work that involves ensuring elevators and related devices are in compliance with applicable laws, regulations and safety codes to safeguard the general public. This position also reviews compliance status of owners who have elevator units and related equipment on their property and ensures that the equipment has been inspected consistent with regulatory requirements. Candidates selected for this classification must have administrative abilities as well as mechanical aptitude. Applicants who have previously applied for this position need not reapply.

POSITION DUTIES
Inspects elevators, escalators, moving walks, lifts, hoists, and other related devices in order to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and codes pertaining to the operation, maintenance, repair and safety of these devices.
Conducts special inspections of elevators and related devices to investigate and resolve issues related to complaints and accidents;
Witnesses tests on existing and altered installations;
Prepares reports of findings to include recommendations for correction of deficiencies;
Provides technical assistance to owners, architects and engineers in order to resolve design, operation and safety problems related to the equipment and devices being inspected;
May order the termination of work or removal of specified machinery or equipment from service until violations are corrected;
May determine the time period within which a violation must be corrected;
May represent the State as a witness in administrative hearings or court cases involving alleged violations of safety standards;
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Two years of experience in the construction, installation, repair, adjustment or inspection of elevators, escalators, moving walks, lifts, hoists or other related devices.
Note:
1. Experience performing safety inspections of elevators and related devices for a federal, state or local regulatory inspection program may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required high school education.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in General Inspection, Investigation, Enforcement and Compliance classifications or General Inspection, Investigation, Enforcement and Compliance specialty codes in the Inspection, Investigation, Enforcement, and Compliance field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
1. Employees in this classification must obtain a Qualified Elevator Inspector certificate issued by an organization accredited by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in on a 24 hours a day basis and will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached, or carry an electronic pager.
2. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
