Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to serve as a statewide consultant for the Maryland WIC Program, providing policy and regulatory guidance to Nutritionists, Dietitians, and USDA defined Competent Professional Authorities (CPAs) who perform dietary health assessments and nutrition counseling for women, infants and children who participate in the WIC Program. This position also evaluates and provides recommendations about the foods that are offered to participants of the WIC Program, including medically necessitated nutritionals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Determined by the Maryland State Board of Dietetic Practice under the licensing requirements for Nutritionists and Dietitians.

Experience: Four years of experience providing professional nutrition or dietetic services, two years of which must have in a public health or community setting.

Notes:

1. A Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Community Health, Nutrition or Public Health may be substituted for one year of required general experience.

2. A Doctorate Degree from an accredited college or university in Community Health, Nutrition or Public Health may be substituted for two years of the required general experience in nutrition or dietetics.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Dietitian and Nutritionist classification or Dietitian and Nutritionist specialty codes in the Dietitian field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. 

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

One year of experience must have involved approving formula and medical nutritional requests including working with healthcare providers and reviewing food items according to government issued guidelines.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should have technical expertise in infant formulas or medical nutritionals, experience working with a management information system for a large public health organization, and experience performing staff training related to a program's policies and procedures.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Dietitian or Nutritionist from the Maryland State Board of Dietetic Practice, 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215 prior to permanent appointment.  A copy of your current license must accompany your application.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
