Main Purpose of Job

The DJS Assistant Superintendent position will assist the Superintendent in managing the overall day-to-day operations of the Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center which includes safety, security, supervision of Group Life staff, personnel and the physical plant management for the facility in accordance with the divisional policy and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation.

NOTE:  For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must accompany the application.   

EXPERIENCE: Six years of experience providing supervision and guidance to youths in a juvenile facility or juvenile services community program for at-risk youth or working in a correctional setting. Two years of this experience must have involved exercising supervisory responsibility over other staff providing services to youth.

NOTE: An Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice or the social or behavioral sciences from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to one year of the required general experience. A Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or the social or behavioral sciences from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to two years of the required general experience

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification will be assigned duties which require the operation on a motor vehicle.  Employees will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

This position is subject to the Correctional Services Article, Title 8, which requires compliance with the Maryland Correctional Training Commission selection/training standards; therefore the candidate will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status, must be at least 21 years of age, and receive a drug test, background check and physical and psychological examinations.
