Main Purpose of Job

An Environmental Health Specialist II is the full performance level of work in a local health department performing inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with environmental health laws and regulations. Employees may be subject to 24-hour call-in and overtime. The work may be performed at private homes, businesses, construction sites and other community settings where travel is required and the environment is often unpredictable. Employees are required to observe infection control precautions in order to prevent contamination and the spread of disease. On some assignments, employees may be required to wear safety equipment and may be required to lift and carry objects weighing over 50 pounds.  This position is responsible for the protection of the public health through an effective regulatory, inspection and education program which promotes proper food handling, safe preparation procedures and sanitary preparation conditions. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Determined by the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists under the licensing requirements for Environmental Health Specialists.

Experience: One year of experience performing inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with environmental health laws and regulations.

Notes: 

1. A Master of Public Health or Master of Science degree from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Environmental Engineering classifications or Environmental Engineering specialty codes in the Engineering and Natural Resources field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess and maintain a current license as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist from the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists.  A copy of your current license or license verification must accompany your application.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
