Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is currently accepting applications for 1- 2 internships with the Helen Avalynne Tawes Garden within the Maryland Park Service. This is an opportunity for students or recent college graduates to gain valuable, hands-on experience in all aspects of the operation of a small public garden. It is most appropriate for someone pursuing a career in horticulture.

The horticulture interns work closely with the garden's horticulturist in areas of plant identification (including invasive species), planting, irrigation, mulching, corrective pruning, integrated pest management, set-up for special events, and garden gift shop duties.

The Tawes Garden has a vital role in supporting the Department of Natural Resources as it preserves, protects, enhances and restores Maryland's natural resources for the wise use and enjoyment of all citizens. As a unit of the Maryland Park Service, the Tawes Garden's mission is to promote, educate and encourage the conservation and appreciation of native and cultivated gardening for the benefit of all.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Current student or recent college graduate.

Experience: None.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Some training in ornamental horticulture is preferred, however, practical experience with ornamental horticulture will be considered.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

A valid driver's license is required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be able to work 16-20 hours per week for at least three consecutive months.
