Main Purpose of Job

Provide secretarial and clerical support services for professional staff engaged in the planning and delivery of vocational and independent living services for individuals who are blind.

POSITION DUTIES

Respond to individual consumer concerns and telephone calls to include accurately recording the information provided by the client or caller, answering general questions about DORS/OBVS; giving accurate information to the client or caller and maintaining proper interpersonal/telephone etiquette.  Provide direct support for Blind staff including reading and driving as needed. Prepare resumes and job related correspondence for clients. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years performing secretarial or clerical work involving typing duties.

Notes: 

1. Additional secretarial or clerical experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

 2. Thirty credit hours with a major in secretarial science or office technology from an accredited college may be substituted at the rate of thirty credits for one year of experience for up to two years of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Administration classifications or Administrative, Clerical, or Office Services specialty codes in the Administrative Support field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

One year of this experience must be with working with vocational rehabilitation programs, community services providers or working with blind individuals or agencies serving the blind.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of the principles and practices of good office management; skill in a variety of software packages; good mathematical ability; strong skills in organizing and completing multiple tasks with close attention to detail; ability to independently respond to telephone and in-person inquiries for routine information; ability to exercise good judgment, courtesy and tact in receiving callers, in giving and obtaining information, and in making proper disposition of problems; and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

The ideal or preferred candidate would have a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
