This is a position specific recruitment for the Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Geological Survey, in Baltimore, MD.  This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies for this position/function only.  The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.  Persons interested in future vacancies within this classification must re-apply.

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Geological Survey in Baltimore, Maryland is currently accepting applications for a Geologist III. The selected candidate will serve as a geologist in planning and conducting investigations relating to the geology of the estuarine and coastal areas of Maryland and geochemistry of rocks, sediments, and water within the State of Maryland. The incumbent will work across many disciplines and project areas lending expertise in the field of geochemistry and how it relates to geological and hydrogeological studies. Projects such as dredge material placement site monitoring, elemental analysis of sediments, carbon analysis of rocks including Marcellus Shale, and water chemistry in groundwater and surface water will be the main focus of this position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science.

Experience: Three (3) years of experience performing professional geological work.

Notes:

1. Possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

2.  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in physical science classifications or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

At least two (2) years of experience in geochemical analysis and interpretation is preferred.

Coursework in chemistry is preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protective equipment.

2. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached or carry an electronic pager.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
