Main Purpose of Job

A Food Service Supervisor I is first line supervisory work in food service operations in a dietary department of a State facility hospital or residential institution.  Employees are responsible for the production and serving of meals in accordance with prescribed procedures and applicable health and sanitation regulations and standards.  Employees in this classification supervise staff engaged in food preparation and serving.

POSITION DUTIES

The Food Service Supervisor I position at the Cheltenham Youth Facility will coordinate and supervise the activities of the kitchen operation including food receiving, storage, productions, service and distribution of food in a timely manner.  This relates to the mission of the agency by providing safe, nutritious and appetizing meals for youth.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of experience in food production or service for a large scale food service operation.

Notes:

1. Additional experience in food production or service for a large scale food service operation may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to four years of the required education.

2. Additional education in the area of food service management, nutritional care, institutional administration or a related area may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to two years of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Food Preparation and Serving classifications or Food Preparation and Serving specialty codes in the Food Service field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Experience in food production or service in an institutional setting such as hospitals, nursing homes, universities or correctional facilities.

2. Possession of a Degree in nutritional care, institutional administration or related area.  

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached or carry an electronic pager.

SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants who meet the Minimum Qualifications will be placed on the eligible list categorized as BEST QUALIFIED. Candidates shall be certified to the eligible list for a period of one year.  This list will be used by the DJS hiring agency to select employees.
