Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Tidewater Ecosystem Assessment (TEA) Division in Annapolis, Maryland, is currently accepting applications for a Natural Resources Biologist IV. The position provides analytical and technical support to the Tidewater Ecosystem Assessment (TEA) division for its tidal and water quality habitat assessment projects. TEA is responsible for the collection, analyses and communication of large environmental and spatial datasets to support decision making for Chesapeake and Coastal Bays restoration efforts. The selected candidate will compile, analyze and interpret technical data to provide recommendations for resource management. The incumbent will also assist in the design of water quality surveys, preparation of technical reports or other communication products (www.eyesonthebay.net), and may assist in grant applications or contract negotiations. The selected candidate is expected to lead and train other employees in technical skills related to water quality assessment.

The position focuses on four major skill sets: 1) Ability to work within a team of biologists, statisticians and natural resource managers to help create products that support the mission of water quality criteria assessment, preparation of grant deliverables, and database-driven communication and decision making tools, 2) Ability to work with large relational databases and understand the meaning of the data and how it is most appropriately quality assured and analyzed, 3) possess effective communication skills for technical, scientific and public audiences, and 4) possess a high level of attention to detail.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology or a natural resources management related field of study

Experience: Five (5) years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management.

Notes: 

1. Additional professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute graduate education beyond a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study as described above at the rate of 15 graduate credits for one year of the required experience for up to two years of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in an area of environmental/ biological/physical science or resource management is preferred.

Experience or ability to learn technical skills that are used in TEA, such as: geographic information systems (GIS), computer/database/web programming (Cold Fusion, Javascript, SQL, web services, Visual Basic, .NET, etc.), and/or SAS/R statistical software is also preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
