Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service/Central Region, is currently accepting applications for a part-time seasonal-contractual Conservation Aide IV position in North East, Maryland. Work entails performing independently moderate complex tasks in maintenance of the State Forest including routine construction work, rendering routine preventive maintenance or mechanical equipment, and making minor repairs or improvements to buildings, fixtures, grounds and roadways. Other duties may include but are not limited to: working with contract vendors on maintenance projects, cutting grass, operating chainsaws, habitat improvement projects, forest fire suppression and boundary line recovery projects.

Note: This position may require some work on weekends and/or holidays. Exposure to inclement weather and heavy lifting are frequent.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience: None. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with prior maintenance, forest or park management.

Knowledge of operation and maintenance of heavy equipment such as bulldozers, plows, large trucks, etc.;  of conservation principles and practices;

Knowledge of agricultural practices of the more common species of plant life and wildlife indigenous to the State and its geography; of fire suppression practices;

Ability to supervise work crews; to provide guidance and training to lower level, semi-skilled and unskilled        workers; to make all necessary adjustments to operated vehicles and equipment; to prepare simple work  reports and schedules; to carry out orders and instructions; to work effectively with fellow workers; to work independently on specialized assignments; to deal effectively with the general public.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Current possession of a valid Class B Maryland Motor Vehicle License is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

This position may require weekend work and/or holidays.
