Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to support the Medical Director in the Howard County Health Department (HCHD) Bureau of Health Promotion with administrative responsibilities for developing, implementing, promoting, managing, and evaluating Bureau community health education programs/initiatives. This position ensures community health programs at HCHD and in the community are designed to enhance public awareness and individual understanding of social/physical/emotional determinants of health, to reduce health risk factors, to improve overall wellness and safety, and to maintain a productive, active Howard County community and workforce.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health Education, Community Health Education or Health Science.

Experience: Two years of experience planning, developing, implementing, promoting and evaluating health education projects, including one year of experience managing community health education projects.

Notes: 

1. A Doctorate from an accredited college or university in Public Health Education, Community Health Education, Health Science, Public Health Policy or related behavioral science and one year of experience managing community health education projects may be substituted for the required education and experience.

2. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health Education, Community Health Education or Health Science and three years of experience planning, developing, implementing, promoting and evaluating health education projects, including one year of experience managing community health education projects may be substituted for the required education and experience.

3. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 18 credit hours in Public Health Education, Community Health Education, Health Science or related behavioral science and four years of experience planning, developing, implementing, promoting and evaluating health education projects, including one year of experience managing community health education projects may be substituted for the required education and experience.   Please provide a copy of your transcripts (official or unofficial) or a list of your completed coursework detailing the course title and number of credits earned for each relevant course.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in Health Educator and Community Health classifications or Health Educator and Community Health specialty codes in the Public Health field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
