Main Purpose of Job

The MD Department of Natural Resources, Fisheries Service, Chesapeake Finfish Program is currently accepting applications for a seasonal Natural Resources Technician I. This position provides field and technical support to Maryland's Alosine Project and Resident Species Project. The selected candidate will assist biologists with seasonal monitoring of shad, river herring, perch, and catfish species in Maryland waters by participating in tagging studies at the Conowingo Dam, commercial pound net surveys, and fishery independent trawl, gill net, and fyke net surveys. Other duties for this position include organizing and entering data, preparing scales for aging, and assisting with other projects in the Chesapeake Finfish Program.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education:  Completion of sixty credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 of which are in biology, environmental science, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, marine biology, marine ecology, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study.  A bachelor’s degree in the previously mentioned fields of study is preferred. 

Experience: None.

Note: 

Additional professional experience conducting research and analysis in the previously stated fields (see Education) may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor's Degree in the previously mentioned fields of study is preferred but not required.

Experience using Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, and Access) is preferred but not required.  

Experience towing trailers, working aboard small vessels, and participating in fish surveys is  preferred but not required.

Experience with Data entry and conducting data quality control assessments is preferred but not required.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
