Introduction

Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum (JPPM), located in the Maryland Historical Trust of the Maryland Department of Planning, is a state museum of archaeology and history located in Calvert County, Maryland. Each year, JPPM hosts thousands of visitors to showcase the historic buildings and park grounds located on-site through educational programs, guided tours and local events.

Main Purpose of Job

This full-time position will work with considerable independence to perform a variety of maintenance tasks on the the buildings and grounds of the Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, including tasks such as simple construction, repairs to roadways and walks, routine preventative maintenance, landscape work, heavy janitorial and general services work.

POSITION DUTIES

This position performs routine and preventative maintenance, construction and repairs to buildings, grounds and vehicles.  Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Maintain grounds by mowing lawns; clearing roadways, parking lots and sidewalks of debris and clutter
• Inspect, maintain, and make minor repairs to electrical and plumbing systems, walls, ceiling, and other structural and decorative building materials
• Use trade tools and equipment appropriate to the respective trade areas
• Operate automobiles, pick up and panel trucks, tractors, and power mowers
• Perform inspection on safety equipment and tools to ensure proper working order
• Adhere to all related safety and sanitation regulations
• Perform routine custodial services to ensure clean, safe and well-equipped areas
• Provide support for the setup and cleanup of special public events held at the park as assigned.

The position requires the ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. Employees may be required to work in areas of extreme heat or cold for extended periods of time and may be required to lift heavy objects, such as furniture or equipment.

The position also requires:
• Ability to work with the public including various age groups
• Ability to perform arithmetic computations and follow instructions
• Ability to prepare reports and keep records
• Ability to estimate time and materials required for an assignment 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: Four years of experience in any combination of the maintenance trades of which three years shall have been in the trades of electricity, plumbing, carpentry, steam fitting, refrigeration or air conditioning.

Notes:
1. Applicants may substitute additional experience in any of the maintenance trades on a year-for-year basis for up to three years of the required education.
2. A degree from an accredited vocational or technical high school with a major in Building Maintenance or a related field may be substituted for up to three years of the required general experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in utilities repair classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in any combination of maintenance trades on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
