Main Purpose of Job

This position is located in the central personnel office for the Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services, which serves approximately 11,500 employees throughout the State. Under the direction of the Manager of the Correctional Centralized Hiring Unit, the incumbent functions a Psychology Associate. Primary duties include psychological testing and evaluation of potential employees, with limited final authority on the suitability of those candidates.

POSITION DUTIES

Administers written psychological examination to more than 1,500 candidates per year; Reviews and evaluates test results to determine if the candidate is suitable for employment.

Coordinates and schedules psychological testing for prospective employees with personnel officers and other agency personnel of this department.

Conducts face to face psychological interviews to candidates whose psychological interviews to candidates whose psychological examination results may need further review; this includes a review of their psychological profile and background history.

Composes written psychological profile using tests scores, the background investigation and the results of the face to face interview for unsuitable applicants;

Performs other duties as required

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Possession of a master's degree in psychology or a related field from an accredited college or university in a program acceptable to the Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists.

Experience: Two years of supervised experience, after completion of the master's degree, providing psychological services in a clinical setting to adult clients.

Note: A twelve month internship required for a master’s or doctoral degree may be substituted for one year of experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Prior to being appointed the candidate must apply to the Board of Examiners of Psychologists for an exemption from licensure. Failure to obtain an exemption within six months of employment will result in termination, unless the Board grants an extension.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Prior to probationary appointment, candidates must meet all selection standards as set forth in the Code of Maryland Regulations by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission. Candidates who receive a probationary appointment must satisfactorily complete a prescribed training program prior to permanent appointment. Selection standards of the Correctional Training Commission may be obtained from the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.
