Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), an agency of the Maryland Department of Planning, is the State’s historic preservation office, dedicated to preserving and interpreting the legacy of Maryland’s past. We are currently seeking a Hazard Mitigation Program Officer to develop a technical assistance and funding program for local governments engaging in hazard mitigation and disaster planning for cultural resources, with a special emphasis on areas affected by sea-level rise.

Working closely with the Chief of the Office of Preservation Planning and Museum Programs, the Program Officer will develop and administer a federal subgrant program to provide assistance for disaster planning and hazard mitigation planning; develop model guidance to facilitate planning and implementation; develop educational materials related to planning best practices; and provide training and educational programs on sea-level rise and disaster-related topics.

This is a twenty-four month position and may require occasional evening or weekend meeting attendance. The ideal candidate will have strong writing and public speaking skills as well as the ability to create and foster positive working relationships.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.  

Experience: Four years of experience in administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Additional experience in administrative staff or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year to year basis for the required general experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of the required experience must be in preservation planning, historic sites survey, cultural resource management or a closely related field. Experience as defined must have been full-time, or its equivalent, in order to be considered as qualifying.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Degree in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, History, Archaeology, Planning or other closely related field.
• Experience in disaster planning, hazard mitigation planning, and/or grant administration.
• Knowledge of computer programs including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite and GIS is also desired.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
