Main Purpose of Job

The Contractual Physician Clinical Specialist is the advanced level of work providing clinical services in an area of medical specialization to patients who are mentally ill, chronically ill or developmentally disabled or are in need of medical and preventive treatment. The chief responsibility of this position is prescribing chemotherapy (principally Methadone/Suboxone) for the treatment of addictive disease in accordance with the requirement of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration. The incumbent will perform exams on new and current patients, supervise the nurse practitioner, lead the facilities treatment team review meetings, and assures that the facility is in compliance with all federal, state and local laws. The physician/consultant reports directly to the Program Manager of the Adult Addiction Clinic. Hours can be flexible, approximately 10-20 hours/week.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Possession of a degree in medicine from an accredited college or university.

Experience: As required for certification in an area of medical specialization by an American Medical Association Specialty Board.

Note:

Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Medical Corpsman and Physicians classifications or Nursing or Physician and Medical Services and Special Corpsman Officer specialty codes in the medicine field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful applicant should have experience in methadone treatment, be American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) certified or willing to become ASAM certified, be Suboxone certified, and possess a DEA license.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1.  Applicants must be certified by an American Medical Association Specialty Board in an area of medical specialization.

2.  Applicants must be licensed by the Maryland Board of Physicians to practice medicine under Maryland State Law. A copy of the current license must be attached to the application.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
