The Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council is a federally funded public policy and advocacy organization. Our mission is to advance the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life by eliminating barriers, creating opportunities, empowering people, and promoting innovation. The DD Council is co-located with the Dept. of Disabilities but functions as an autonomous organization with its own director, staff, strategic plan, priorities and activities. Main Purpose of Job

The Director of Communications develops and executes a multi-strategy communications plan to provide essential information and resources to targeted audiences; raise awareness of Council priorities and initiatives; and impact and influence issues of importance to the Council. The Director of Communications also manages and contributes to the Council's internal and external reports, and performs other duties that support and enhance the work of the Council. The Director of Communication works closely and collaboratively with a small staff.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Leads ongoing assessment of the Council's communications and executes strategies to achieve desired outcomes. Identifies new and creative ways to enhance written and visual content, expand audiences and coordinate strategies with other Council activities. The audiences for Council communications include people with developmental disabilities and their families, advocates, state and federal government officials, legislators, service providers and the general public.
  • Manages all aspects of external communications including, but not limited to, the Council's website, Facebook page, annual report, monthly newsletter, and News You Can Use topical announcements. Serves as editor-in-chief and designer, contributes content and coordinates content from other staff. Periodically interviews external sources and writes stories.
  • Works with contracted graphic designer on annual report and special publications.
  • Assists with the development of the Council's 5-year state plan.
  • Oversees the completion of the Council's annual federal performance report, contributes content and coordinates input from other staff.
  • Manages special projects, such as photo contests and public awareness campaigns.
  • Provides leadership and support to special initiatives and events.
  • Researches topics for Council communications and reports, and to support advocacy/public policy work of other staff.
  • Conducts surveys to solicit input about Council resources, grants and activities.
    Staffs Membership Committee, conducts new member orientation and oversees member support.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: A Bachelor's degree with a major in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, English or related field.

Experience: The Council seeks a creative individual excited about our mission who has the following experience and skills: 

Experience and demonstrated skills in a variety of communication strategies and  public relations;

Experience with website management and social media platforms; 

Experience and demonstrated skill with publication development;

Excellent interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication and organizational skills;

Exceptional editing skills;

Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and ability to work effectively in a team;

Strong analytical skills; 

Ability to communicate complex ideas and information in a manner understandable to diverse audiences; Strong computer skills, including competency in Microsoft Office, photo editing, graphics, publication software, and website software;

Ability to work successfully with diverse individuals and organizations, including people with developmental disabilities and their  family members; and   

Knowledge of current and emerging communication strategies.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred experience with and knowledge of developmental disabilities.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

This position requires in state travel.
