The MD Police and Correctional Training Commission has a full time position available with the Firearms Training Unit.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Carroll County: Sykesville, Maryland

Primary work location is the Firearms Training Facility, 7320 Slacks Road, Sykesville, Md.  Some travel to other locations in the State of Maryland may be required.

Main Purpose of Job

Teaching /instructing entrance level police and correctional officers and police and correctional instructor level with firearms.

Principal instructor for entrance and instructor level schools.

Facilitate an adult learning environment, creation of lesson plans, research of current teaching taxonomy and needs assessments for future programs.

POSITION DUTIES

The selected candidate will be teaching basic entrance level weapon classes, firearms instructor schools, conversion schools, special weapons schools and other special programs and requests.

The selected candidate will serve as a contact for individual schools, being responsible for administrative matters and the coordination of programs.

The selected candidate will coordinate training programs with other program managers within the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions and other Law Enforcement agencies.

The selected candidate will develop course content, programs and curriculum that meet the training objectives of the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions.

The selected candidate will be required to evaluate students, to determine additional/remedial training or other requirements.

The selected candidate may be asked to participate in research programs/projects in the furtherance of needs assessment in specific areas of training.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience:

Three years of experience in administrative or professional work.
 Two or more years employment as a police or correctional officer within the last 5 years, with authorization to carry a firearm.
Ability to obtain and retain MPCTC Firearms Instructor Certification within 6 months of employment. 

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative staff or professional work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credits for each year of the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Three years’ experience as a MPCTC Firearms Instructor and two years as a trainer/instructor of Police or Correctional Officers developing and delivering training. Applicants must be detailed in describing the nature of their training/instructional work experience.

Firearms Instructors working in an academy setting delivering training to criminal justice employees in formal and/or firing range settings. Experience in managing Firearms training programs for agencies is also preferred.
