Videographer

Recruitment #14-007585-008

GRADE

9990

LOCATION OF POSITION

Maryland Public Television

11767 Owings Mills Blvd.

Owings Mills, MD 21117

Main Purpose of Job

Videographers are the primary source for capturing the video images and sound that producers use to create their programs. Contemporary production practices dictate that producers move beyond the confines of the studio and go to the story directly, regardless of where it is. The ability to record high quality material on location, despite its limitations, is the prime asset of the videographer.

POSITION DUTIES

  • A videographer operates portable equipment with the objective of recording video and audio for use in production.  The equipment includes video camera and accessories, microphones and audio mixer, lights and lighting related accessories, production equipment and transport vehicle.  The videographer must be capable of working with minimum supervision, while maintaining high standards of video production.  A thorough knowledge of the camera is necessary, including its use and basic maintenance.  The position requires a firm grasp of the aesthetics of photography, camera movement and composition, plus facility with camera recorded audio.
  • The videographer should be capable of offering direction to on-camera talent, and should be concerned with the quality of the talent's performance.  A videographer should be aware of the specific needs of the client (producer, reporter, director), the limitations of the job (time, budget, relative priority) and the probable final use of the project.  They should be able to handle the scheduling of the necessary equipment for a production.  Furthermore, the videographer should have a detailed understanding of the essentials of video editing to guide the proper selection of shots.
  • Studio/location production personnel operate as part of a television production crew.  They are required to assemble and disassemble sets, move and hang fixtures from a studio grid, assist the lighting director, and setup and strike equipment after a production.  During actual production they must be able to competently perform in the role of floor director, camera operator, production assistant, robotic camera operator or telepromptor operator.  production crew members work under direct supervision of a studio supervisor, and the direction of a television director.  On location, the crew member will perform the same functions with portable television production equipment.  because location shooting lacks the controls of the studio environment, crew members must display flexibility and initiative in achieving high standards.
  • The videographer must drive the state vehicles in a responsible manner.  Maryland Public Television's name is on every videographer's van.  The videographer must also maintain log sheet for regular maintenance.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

The candidate will be an energetic self starter and have at least four years' experience shooting broadcast news and or feature packages; the ability to frame scenes and follow the action on location; direct talent; technical mastery of the Sony PMW-11 and PDW700 XDcam cameras and/or similar cameras.  The ability to use accompanying equipment such as lens, mixers, tripods, lighting fixtures and various microphones.
