This is a MANAGEMENT SERVICES position with the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. The incumbent serves at the pleasure of the appointing authority.

Main Purpose of Job

The Social Worker of the Step Down/Mental Health Transition Unit reports to the Program Director of the MHTU and is responsible for the coordination and implementation of the following areas of mental health program services for the MHTU: Provide aftercare planning for inmates eligible for release to the community from the unit. Provide group and individual therapy as directed. Maintain records in accordance with directives. Provide maintenance and support to clients, unit and other SD/MHTU staff.

POSITION DUTIES

Provide comprehensive and complete aftercare plan for all assigned inmates being released from Step Down/Mental Health Transactional Unit and collateral units as necessary or assigned

Provide comprehensive and complete aftercare plan for all assigned inmates being released from SD/MHTU and collateral units as necessary or assigned

Performs a clinical assessment of inmates psychosocial treatment needs for clinical case management services

Provides clinical assessment of mental health transition unit referrals for appropriate admission(i.e. review diagnostic impression)

Conducts clinical intake assessments on inmates transferred into the mental health transition program to assess for mental health service needs

Assigns inmates to appropriate group counseling/psycho-educational module based on clinical intake assessments

Conducts individual clinical intervention to formulate an individualized treatment plan to identify needs and address treatment needs

Conducts mental health assessment for inmates parole hearing

Evaluates inmates for recommendation for special conditions of parole

Advocates for community services for identified inmates

Other duties as needed or assigned

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:  Determined by the State Board of Social Work Examiners under the licensing requirements for Social Workers.

EXPERIENCE:  Three years of experience providing clinical and therapeutic or other social work services through the application of the principles, methods and procedures of professional social work to clients requiring rehabilitative counseling or forensic social work services.

NOTE:  This job classification requires a Master's Degree in Social Work.

NOTE:  A doctoral degree in social work from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to one year of experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

One year experience to include conducting individual clinical intervention.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees are required to meet mandatory standards for continuing education as determined by the hiring department. Employees who fail to obtain the required continuing education credits shall be subject to disciplinary action including demotion, suspension and dismissal.

2. Employees of the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services and the Department of Juvenile Services must complete an approved training program in group counseling techniques.

3. Employees of the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services and the Department of Juvenile Services may be required to complete the Level I Counseling course certified by the Maryland AIDS Professional Education Center.

4. Employees of the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services and the Department of Juvenile Services must qualify for and successfully complete the Entry Level Training Academy operated by the Police and Correctional Training Commissions.
