Introduction

Main Purpose of Job

Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) in collaboration with the University of Maryland, the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), and the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR) is seeking a Database Specialist Supervisor to assist with the design and development of all the databases that compromise the Maryland Longitudinal Data System Center as well as day to day maintenance and control of MLDS database system.

POSITION DUTIES

Plans and administers database management system activities in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures that comply with The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, Information Technology Security Policies and System Development Life Cycle; prepares and maintains database management system documentation and technical literature related to database management services, policies, procedures and standards; meets with upper-level management, vendors, systems users, and other information technology staff to discuss and resolve database problems and issues, including system performance, utilization and capacity and disaster recovery planning; prepares statistical and narrative reports of database management activities and special projects; collaborates in the development, testing and implementation of new or revised operating systems including data communications, application systems, database management systems and new or modified computer hardware.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Computer Science or other information technology related field to include course work in database management systems.

Experience: Three years of experience designing, developing, implementing, maintaining and controlling database management systems for computers. Experience supervising other Information Technology professionals or projects is preferred.
