Main Purpose of Job

The DJS Assistant Superintendent position will assist the Superintendent in managing the overall day to day operation of the Charles H. Hickey, Jr. School, which includes safety, security, supervision of Group Life staff, personnel and the physical plant management for the facility in accordance with Departmental and Divisional policy and procedures.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Experience: Six years of experience providing supervision and guidance to youths in a juvenile facility or juvenile services community program for at-risk youth or working in a correctional setting. Two years of this experience must have involved exercising supervisory responsibility over other staff providing services to youth.

Note: An Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice or the social or behavioral sciences from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience. A Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or the social or behavioral sciences from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up two years of the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates for employment in this classification will be subject to drug, fingerprinting, psychological testing and a through background check as required by the Code of Maryland regulations Title 12, subtitle 10, general regulations of the Maryland Correctional Training Commission.
