Introduction

Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum (JPPM), located in the Maryland Historical Trust of the Maryland Department of Planning, is a state museum of archaeology and history located in Calvert County, Maryland. Each year, JPPM hosts thousands of visitors to showcase the historic buildings and park grounds located on-site through educational programs, guided tours and local events.

Main Purpose of Job

JPPM is currently seeking an enthusiastic and energetic museum educator to work under the direction of the Museum Director to develop, market, implement and evaluate on-site educational programs, outreach initiatives, summer camps, and distance learning programs related to the museum’s mission of connecting people to the past through history and archaeology.

This position is responsible for building and maintaining positive relationships with administrators and teachers within the public school system to create new educational program partnerships. Duties include budget administration, fundraising, grant writing, and supervising JPPM’s educators and Visitor Center staff.

This position is required to work on-site 5 days a week, 40 hours per week. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required. The successful candidate will have excellent organizational, interpersonal, public speaking and writing skills; knowledge of learning styles, developmentally appropriate educational audiences and state education standards, experience working with school-aged and adult audiences; strong interest in working collaboratively; and proficiency in computer-based word processing, spreadsheets and databases.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, museum education, history or related field.

Experience: Two years of experience in creating, developing, and administering classroom-based teaching, public history programs or other educational school programs.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with a Master’s degree in a related field and/or experience creating programs that connect education, history, and/or cultural resources with local communities will be given preference. Supervisory and budget management experience is also preferred.
