Main Purpose of Job

This is a professional position serving as the technical specialist in the area of school safety, violence prevention, gang prevention, school discipline, and emergency preparedness/response for Maryland's local school systems.

POSITION DUTIES

Coordinates the development of training guidelines for local school systems for a comprehensive school safety plan, emergency preparedness and response, and the recording and reporting of bullying and harassment data; coordinates trainings in the promotion of positive behaviors; supports emergency response in school systems and the prevention and intervention in negative behaviors such as bullying and harassment; provides assistance to MSDE and local school systems in the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive safe school plan (e.g. emergency response, crisis response, bullying policies and gang policies by producing guidelines, assessment, and monitoring tools; examines the latest evidence based practices and data to assist local school systems in program development and implementation of programs and initiatives to promote safe schools.

MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:  Master’s Degree or equivalent 36 credit hours of post-baccalaureate course work in Education, Education Policy, School-Based Counseling, School Administration/Supervision or a related area. 

EXPERIENCE:  Five years of administrative or teaching experience in or affiliated with an educational program, including two years experience coordinating or administering an education program. Experience coordinating strategic planning for a local school system or educational organization as well as experience implementing, communicating education policies and procedures including emergency preparedness/response is preferred.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of State and federal laws, regulations, policies, and programs including the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and the Code of Maryland Regulations; skill in delivering technical assistance, training, and guidance to local school systems and internal and external stakeholders related to school safety and emergency preparedness/response; skill in managing multiple projects, timelines, and deadlines; ability to work as a team member and establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
