Introduction

The Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Computer Information Services Specialist II within its Division of Administration & Technology’s Office of Information and Technology Management.

Main Purpose of Job

The primary responsibility of the incumbent is to provide customer focused end user support in a fast paced Microsoft-based network environment. This position is also responsible for assisting the database administrator with creating, maintaining, and administering databases and reports generated from the databases.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties include managing user network accounts, supporting microcomputer hardware and software both on and off site; supporting and troubleshooting mobile devices; coaching and training end-users in the use of line-of-business applications; documenting help desk calls and issue resolutions. This position requires extensive, practical experience handling help desk requests utilizing logical reasoning and resourcefulness. The highest level of customer service is required.  

 The incumbent manages network and computer accounts through Active Directory; deploys, modifies and repairs PC hardware including desktops, laptops, printers and monitors; supports software including Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office; assists the database administrator with creating and maintaining databases and reports using MS Access and SQL 2008+; supports Apple and Android mobile devices; provides technical assistance and training to users in person and by phone, email or remote assistance; coordinates on-site servicing of equipment under warranty or contract; communicates with hardware vendors on warranty and non-warranty issues as well as product and pricing availability.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One year of experience evaluating, implementing and maintaining personal computer hardware and software.

Note: 1.  Experience responding to and resolving help desk calls from users of computers, or operating computer equipment for the purpose of data entry, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, data base or other applications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

 2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Cyber and Information Systems classifications or Cyber and Information Systems specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

The ability to handle multiple, concurrent and high priority tasks is a must. Excellent communication skills, time management skills and problem solving skills are a must. The ability to make sound decisions quickly are a must. This position requires a high level of technical knowledge pertaining to hardware and software used in and on personal computers and servers in a Microsoft Windows environment, and requires the incumbent maintain proficiency in industry best practices.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
