Main Purpose of Job

The Developmental Disabilities Associate, under auspices of Cottage Managers, personally instructs and directs the provision of outcome-based instructional, leisure and related activities on behalf of individuals with developmental disabilities. Incumbent, via interdepartmental working relationships and supervision of associate staff, designs, coordinates, implements, and monitors recreational and leisure time activities, events and projects to equip individuals with broadest possible involvement in, and exposure to, life-learning on-and-off grounds experiences. In addition, because most residential participants require hands-on mobility, gross motor skills, and ancillary training, incumbent must adhere to a regimen of therapy needs including physical, occupational, speech and environmental awareness. Incumbent designs and implements programs to increase individuals skills in such areas as self-help, socialization, productive leisure time and appropriate interpersonal interactions and communications.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university with 15 credit hours in health or human services, education or the behavioral sciences.

Experience: One year of experience providing direct client services in a developmental disability or similar behavior modification setting.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute an Associate of Arts or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in the treatment of developmental disabilities in a mental health or closely related curriculum including a supervised clinical practicum in a developmental disability or similar behavior modification setting for the required education and experience.

2. Candidates may substitute additional experience providing rehabilitation services in a developmental disability setting at the rate of one year of experience for 30 credit hours of education.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Hospital Corpsman classifications or Health Care Specialist and Medical Services specialty codes in the health related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current certificate as a Nursing Assistant from the Maryland State Board of Nursing, 4140 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215. 2. Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete training and maintain current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.  A copy of your current CNA license must be attached to your application.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
