Introduction

The resulting eligible list will be used to fill current and future vacancies in all Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services (DPSCS) facilities as they occur.  Candidates interested in future vacancies at other facilities or locations should apply at this time.  Applicants certified to this list will remain eligible for one year.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Vacancies currently exists at the following institutions/locations:

Md. Correctional Institution - Hagerstown, Md.  (Washington County)

Md. Correctinal Insitution for Women - Jessup, Md. (Anne Arundel County)

Main Purpose of Job

To maintain custody, security and supervision of adult inmates confined to a Maryland Correctional Institution during athletic recreation periods. This position will also be responsible for planning, directing and administering the recreational program.

POSITION DUTIES

The Correctional Recreation Officer I is the entry level work providing recreational activities for adult inmates confined in a correctional facility.

Controls inmate movement during recreation periods; develops and schedules an intramural program of sporting activities within the institution for general populations inmates and special needs inmates;  responsible for managing a budget including the ordering of exercise equipment for the entire institution; administers basic first responder first aid as necessary; comply with assigned post orders and specific institutional directives relevant to assignment.

Employees in this classification may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.  Work is performed primarily in a correctional facility and employees are continually exposed to inmates who may be abusive and hostile.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: A bachelor's degree in physical education or recreation from an accredited college or university.

Experience: None.

Note: Experience in organizing recreational activities may be substituted for the required college education on a year-for-year basis.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees who have not already done so must meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission for institutional support staff during their probationary period. (Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209 of the Annotated Code). Selection standards for institutional support staff training are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01 and include the following:

U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status
Must be at least 21 years of age
Oral interview
A completed background investigation
Physical examination.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations 06.01.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
