Introduction

As the historical agency for Maryland, the State Archives is the central depository for government records of permanent value. Records date from the founding of the Maryland Colony in 1634 to the present day. The State Archives identifies, appraises, acquires, describes, preserves, and makes physically and electronically available (in a secure and dynamic environment) the permanent records of Maryland’s past, while providing reliable current information to citizens and public officials for the better administration of Maryland government and understanding of Maryland history. The Archives describes Maryland state, county, and municipal government agencies, and their origin, functions, structure, personnel, historical evolution, reports, and other aspects of Maryland and its history; and encourages the study of Maryland government and history. The agency also serves as the custodian of the state's fine art collections.

Main Purpose of Job

The incumbent is a member of the Criminal History Research staff, assisting with required research in support of law enforcement. This position also provides reference services in the Archives searchroom, interviewing patrons, determining research needs, advising of effective research strategies, ordering materials retrieved from the stacks, and taking records reproduction orders. The incumbent assists with monitoring patrons for security and compliance with Archives rules and regulations. These duties are performed under the direct supervision of the Director of Reference Services. This is professional archival work providing access to records, a primary component of the mission of the State Archives.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Assists in the conduct of criminal history research. Researches requests from several sources, locates records, makes and certifies copies, and responds to the requesting agency.
  • Provides reference services in the Archives searchroom, interviewing patrons, determining research needs, advising of effective research strategies, ordering materials retrieved from the stacks, taking records reproduction orders, and performing records retrievals.  Also, monitoring patrons for security and compliance with Archives rules and regulations.
  • Provides reference assistance to patrons who make requests by telephone, traditional mail and email by conducting basic research, locating, retrieving, copying and refiling archival records and writing response letters.
  • Assists with the operation of the lobby registration desk as required when other trained personnel are unavailable.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: None

Notes:

1. Applicants may substitute additional experience in professional archival work with public records on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Applicants may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Archivist classifications or Archivist specialty codes in the Library and Archives field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
