Main Purpose of Job
To appraise residential real property at fair market value for use in the calculation of real property taxes.
POSITION DUTIES
An Assessor 1, Real Property is the entry level of work performing Real Property assessments for Tax assessment purposes. Duties include, but are not limited to:
1. Learning to inspect real property to determine the appraisal value; learning to analyze existing market data and to apply standard appraisal procedures to determine the value of land or buildings
2. Learning to determine the value of auxiliary items to the property
3. Learning to determine building cost estimates based on analysis of building construction cost and other duties related to the Assessment of Real property
Strong Mathematical skills and proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite particularly Excel would be used to perform the duties of this position. Employees in this classification do not supervise.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: None.
Note: Additional appraisal experience involving the valuation of real property may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION
Limited to candidates willing to accept employment in Calvert County.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Employees in this classification may be required to have daily use of a motor vehicle while on official State business. Standard mileage allowance will be paid for use of a privately owned vehicle.
2. Upon appointment, persons possessing a real estate broker or sales license, or a license to sell insurance, will be required to put same in an "Inactive" status.
3. Employees are prohibited from participating in any outside activity, including private appraisals, which may be deemed a conflict of interest by the Director of the Department of Assessments and Taxation.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS
The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
