THIS RECRUITMENT IS LIMITED TO CURRENT PERMANENT AND CONTRACTUAL DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES (DNR) EMPLOYEES ONLY.

This is a position specific recruitment for the Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service- Westminster, Maryland location.  This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies for this position/function only.  The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.  Persons interested in future vacancies within this classification must re-apply.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Westminster, Maryland (Carroll County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources Forest Service is currently accepting applications for a Licensed Forester position located near Westminster, Maryland. This is a permanent State position with benefits. Duties will include planning and carrying out tree buffer plantings, backyard buffer programs (seedling give-away for riparian homeowners), tree planting maintenance/reinforcement projects, and urban tree planting programs. The position will provide forestry assistance for Governor's Stream Restoration Challenge grants (pairing tree planting with service learning/education for high and middle school students) and other tree planting programs. It involves developing forest stewardship plans as a licensed forester and landscape stewardship approaches. GIS and invasive species control skills are desired but not required. After receiving appropriate training and certification, duties may also require scheduled 24-hour periodic on-call status and responding to wildland fire emergencies in the state. The position is full-time, 40/hours/week, with occasional weekend or evening obligations.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in forestry from a school of forestry accredited by the Society of American Foresters.

Experience: Two (2) years of forestry experience involving forest or park management, wildlife biology, forest recreation planning, forest engineering, urban and community forestry, timber harvest and marketing, forest planning or forest protection.

Notes:

1. Applicants may substitute a Master of Science degree approved by the State Board of Foresters for one year of the required experience.

2. The education and experience requirements are pursuant to the Business Occupations and Professions Article, Sections 7-206 and 7-304 of the Annotated Code.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

This recruitment is limited to current permanent and contractual Department of Natural Resources (DNR) employees.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Pursuant to the Business Occupations and Professions Article, Section 7-304 of the Annotated Code, employees with two or more years of experience as described above shall qualify for a license issued by the State Board of Foresters. Persons appointed to this classification must obtain this license before the end of their probationary period, or during the first year of employment for promotional employees.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Persons appointed to this classification will be subject to assignment in any county of the State. Upon permanent appointment, the employee will be required to reside in the county or region to which they are assigned.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, are required to submit a telephone number where they can be reached in case of forest fire emergencies.

3. Employees in this classification will be required to obtain specific levels of fire suppression training as mandated by agency policies.

4. Employees in this classfication will be subject to working outside during all seasons in possible adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, rain and snow).

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
