Main Purpose of Job

Coordinates all Animal Health field services operations, to support the agency's mission of protecting animal and public health, promoting agriculture and ensuring food safety. Supervises two field veterinarians. Responsible for all field activities at auction markets, farms, shows and other facilities or premises where animals are kept, sold or moved. Activities include regulatory inspections and enforcement duties such as placing quarantines; disease surveillance and disease investigations; and animal emergency operations such as pet sheltering. Serves as Animal Disease Traceability Coordinator (ADT) and manages the USDA ADT Cooperative Agreement. Assists the Chief, Animal Health in developing or revising animal health regulations.

POSITION DUTIES

Supervises two field veterinarians.

Identifies resource needs and prepares field services budget annually. Reviews and approves new purchases and repairs. Manages cooperative agreements, contracts and MOUs and oversees subordinates managing such programs or agreements.

Directs Regional Animal Health Field Service delivery in the two state regions - East and West for routine and emergency activities. Manages training programs for field staff and subordinate field staff assigned to subordinate Regional Veterinarians.

Identifies needs, writes, reviews, approves and/or assigns preparation of Animal Health policies and Standard Operating Procedures.

Represents the Department and Program in public and other agency meetings and events.

Serves as lead, Animal Health in the absence of the State Veterinarian (Chief, Animal Health and absence of Assistant Chief, Operations). In this duty is responsible for the proper execution of the essential duties of the Chief, including making routine decisions, signing official documents, and issuing health orders. 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Possession of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or a Veterinary Medical Doctor's degree from a college or university accredited or recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Experience: Five years of general veterinary medicine experience, at least three years of which must have been in regulatory programs related to animal health.
