Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) is the State’s historic preservation office and located within the MD Department of Planning. MHT is currently seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual to serve as the Research and Survey Administrator within the Office of Research, Survey and Registration.

This position supervises the Research and Survey unit, consistent with MDP and the Division’s mission of studying, evaluating, protecting and interpreting the state’s historic sites, structures, districts, and cultural traditions. This unit is the core of the Office, from which all research and field data is developed, and includes the statewide architectural research and survey program.

POSITION DUTIES

This position provides direction for all phases of planning, development, implementation, and personnel oversight for the employees and programs in this section. Primary duties include overall supervision of historical and architectural research, management of grant-funded projects, providing technical expertise to the public and preservation partners throughout the state, conducting architectural assessment and analysis, review and approval of site-specific preservation projects, and coordination of interdisciplinary research projects.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, History, or other closely related field.

Experience: Five years professional experience in historic preservation or architectural field survey. Knowledge of historic architecture, building analysis, and investigation/documentation methods is essential. Experience as defined must have been full-time, or its equivalent, in order to be considered as qualifying.

Notes: Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, History or other closely related field may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year to year basis for the required general experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated ability to conduct and oversee architectural field surveys and scholarly research is preferred. Demonstrated writing and public speaking skills, and strong interpersonal abilities, are necessary. Experience using Adobe Photoshop, Sketch Up and/or AutoCad is desirable. Preference will be given to candidates with supervisory and project management experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
