Introduction

The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, Division of Labor and Industry is accepting applications from qualified candidates for the position of Wage and Hour Investigator I for the Prevailing Wage Unit. This is a position specific recruitment and the certified eligible list created will be used to fill this position or function only,   Persons interested in future positions will need to re-apply at that time.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to ensure compliance with the Prevailing Wage Lsw and the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council standards by conducting field investigations on construction sites and auditing payroll records. This position calls for the analysis of fact and the application of relevant laws to determine coverage, assure compliance and assess amounts of wages, Liquidated Damages owed to employees and the owner (State of Maryland).

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of general investigative work. Note: Additional years of experience as stated above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

One year of the required experience must have involved criminal investigations.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

PERFERRED: Training associated with evaluation of behavior dynamics is desired.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in these classes may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in these classes may be required to have daily use of a motor vehicle while on official State business. Standard mileage allowance will be paid for use of a privately owned vehicle.

All candidates are subject to a background check against records maintained by the Division of Unemployment Insurance (DLLR/DUI) to determine whether any monies are owed to DLLR/DUI as a result of an unemployment insurance overpayment and/or fraud.  Any upaid debt may have an impact on whether or not a candidate is offered employment. 

SELECTION PROCESS

Successful candidates will be placed on the certified eligible list categorized as Best Qualified, Better Qualified or Qualified.  Candidates will remain on the list for a period of one year and will be referred to the hiring unit for interview selection.  Hiring units will select those candidates most closely demonstrating the qualifications for interview.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination for this recruitment will be an evaluation and rating of the information provided on your application.  Therefore, it is essential that the application is filled out completely and accurately, listing all relevant education and experience and addressing the specific qualifications shown above.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
