LOCATION OF POSITION

This position is within the Facilities Operations & Maintenance, Baltimore Public Buildings & Grounds Division located at 301 W. Preston Street, Baltimore, Maryland.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to supervise work in all building maintenance trades for the Facilities Operation and Maintenance Division of the MD Department of General Services. Those trades include electricity, plumbing, carpentry, locksmith, steam fitting, refrigeration and air conditioning.

POSITION DUTIES

Maintenance Chief I-IV encompasses the supervisory level of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance workers. Employees receive moderate or general supervision from a higher-level Maintenance Chief, Maintenance Supervisor or designated administrator.

Duties for this position include but are not limited to:

- Supervise through subordinate supervisors, the assignments for skilled and semi-skilled maintenance workers and Contractors at the Baltimore State Office Complex;

- Follow-up and inspects maintenance assignments that have been scheduled for repairs or renovations and report progress;

- Supervise inspections of buildings and grounds, fire drills, elevator inspections and other duties related to the safety of the employees in the Complex;

- Handle emergencies;

- Perform Level II Asbestos work and special projects;

- Conduct performance appraisals for employees.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Completion of eighth grade.

Experience: Five years experience in the maintenance or building construction trades including four years of responsibility for assigning, reviewing and approving the work of others. 

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher, as a non-commissioned officer in utilities classifications or mechanical maintenance management specialty codes in utility systems repair, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants with a High School Diploma or GED are preferred.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

This recruitment is limited to applicants willing to accept employment in Baltimore City.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position.  Successful candidates will be placed on the employment eligibility list categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED, or QUALIFIED.  The list will be valid for at least one year and may be extended.  The list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees.

You must possess the minimum qualifications before you may be selected for a State job – Verification will be completed by the appointing authority.  If you are scheduled to complete an educational or licensing requirement within six months of the examination, you may participate in the examination process.  Permanent State employees may also complete necessary experience requirements within six months of the date of an examination.  Credit is given for relevant part-time, temporary or volunteer experience based on the number of hours worked per week.  You must include on your application the time you spent in such activity.  You must be legally authorized under the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act to be hired in the position for which you apply.
