ALCOHOL AND DRUG ASSOCIATE COUNSELOR

Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.  The resulting eligible list will be used to fill positions in DPSCS Correctional facilities throughout the State of Maryland.  Applicants certified to this list will remain eligible for at least one year.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Although this particular position is located at the Eastern Correctional Institution in Westover, Maryland, this recruitment will be used to fill future vacancies throughout the State of Maryland.  Therefore, you should indicate every MD county where you are willing to accept employment on your application.

Main Purpose of Job

The Alcohol and Drug Associate Counselor is the full performance level of work at the certified Bachelor's degree level, counseling clients with substance use disorders by using intervention, treatment and rehabilitation. Employees in this classification do not supervise.

The main purpose is to assess all incoming inmates in a designated institution for substance abuse problems and provide counseling, intervention, and treatment and rehabilitation services to those inmates.  This may also include inmates that are dually diagnosed.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Determined by the Maryland State Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists under the requirements for Certified Associate Counselors-Alcohol and Drug.

Experience: Determined by the Maryland State Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists under the certification requirements for Certified Associate Counselors-Alcohol and Drug.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

One year of experience in screening and assessment utilizing the TCU Drug Screen II or similar system.  Ability to assess clients using the TAP (or similar system) to identify clients needing substance abuse treatment services.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. In accordance with Health Occupations Title 17 and Code of Maryland Regulations 10.58.07, candidates must be certified by the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists as a Certified Associate Counselor-Alcohol and Drug.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

SELECTION PROCESS

The examination may consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the job.  If you do not receive a request for supplemental information, the rating may be based on your application.  It is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.  Successful candidates will be placed on the employment eligibility list categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED, or QUALIFIED.  The list will be valid for at least one year and may be extended.  The list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees.
