Introduction

This position is limited to permanent and contractual employees working with the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS), Maryland Reception Diagnostic & Classification Center (MRDCC); Central Maryland Correctional Facility.

Baltimore City, Maryland 21202

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to function as a clerk in the MRDCC mailroom as well as process both incoming and outgoing mail.

POSITION DUTIES

Ensure that all incoming mail is processed in accordance with both federal and agency guideline procedures. Report any violations to immediate supervisor.

Ensure that all outgoing mail (from all sources) is processed as per standard operating procedures. Ensure that outgoing mail has proper postage for delivery to addressee.

Order postage so that outgoing mail will not be delayed;

Process, in accordance with existing guidelines, both incoming and outgoing legal mail for incarcerated felons, ensures that incoming mail is delivered to addressee;

Function as switchboard operator as necessary.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years of experience performing clerical duties.

Notes:

1. Additional experience performing clerical duties may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Applicants may substitute education from an accredited college or university at the rate of thirty semester credit hours for one year of experience on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

3.Six months clerical training with three courses in subjects such as keyboarding, clerical math, word processing, spreadsheets, data base, graphics presentation, proofreading, or office etiquette may be substituted for six months of the required experience.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to type accurately at a minimum speed of forty words per minute.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of the position. Successful candidates will be ranked as Best Qualified, Better Qualified, or Qualified and placed on the employment (eligible) list for at least one year.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
